Lyreacrompane Townland

Lyreacrompane is in the middle of four towns. It has plenty of forestry and a lot of bog. Long ago there was a train to carry turf.

Lyre has a community centre, post office, shop, church and pub called the Four Elms. Every Friday people over fifty-five come to the centre. They eat their dinner and play games like chess. Lyre also has a Grotto, it was built in 1954 which was the Marian Year.

Lyreacrompane Church

The river Smearla flows behind Lyreacrompane church. It has brown trout, white trout, salmon and eels. It floods in heavy rainfall that brings down lots of fish. There is a bar bridge over it behind the church. The church fell down in 1918 and was rebuilt in 1956. Fr Moore is the priest of our church.

Last year (2006) we celebrated the 50th Anniversary of our church. We had a big mass and the Bishop of Kerry came. After the mass there was a big party with sandwiches and lots of food and there was sweets for the kids. We had a guest too, The Sam Maguire Cup. Everyone had a good time.

Dan Paddy Andy Festival

Every year in August the Dan Paddy Andy festival is held in memory of Dan Paddy Andy the Matchmaker. Dan Paddy Andy was born in Renegown in 1899. Dan made at least ten matches a year. He made his first match in 1932. Dan was known as the man with the triple name or the wild man of the mountain. Dan opened a dancehall in Renegown.

John B Keane wrote a book about him in both English and Irish. Dan died in 1965 at the age of 66 and he died in the same room as he was born in. In the Dan Paddy Andy festival there is a dog show, puppet show, dancing, music, story telling, food and drink, magician, singing, family and friends having fun, prizes and plays in the marquay. As wells as a big walk around Lyreacrompane.
